A PASSION FOR MOVEMENT…
After moving to Los Angeles in 2005, Julie discovered a passion for the actor-centric Viewpoints work taught by Alexandra Billings in the professional laboratory classes at Steppenwolf Classes West, where she later joined the faculty as a movement instructor. In this environment, Julie began to explore the interconnectedness of movement, text analysis, and unscripted collaboration that is the foundation of much of her current work as a teaching artist. Julie continues to fuel her passion for physical storytelling through constant development and expansion of her work and practice. Training with like-minded colleagues and educators at such innovative ensembles as Frantic Assembly, Gob Squad and SITI Company, she has honed her mastery of Viewpoints and Composition practice with an emphasis on ensemble and the revelation of story through the exploration of theatrical space. A trained dancer, Julie has studied many forms including ballet, jazz, ballroom, swing, Latin, African and Afro-Caribbean styles. In addition to 25+ years of personal practice and apprenticeship, Julie is a certified yoga instructor with over a decade of yoga teaching experience and extensive study of anatomy and body mechanics. Julie’s investigation of a diverse range of alignment/movement theories including Laban, Feldenkrais, and Alexander Techniques, as well as various forms of martial arts, Suzuki, Clown, mime, stage combat, and physical improvisation influence her teaching and performing.
